Sherwood Park began in spring 1956 as a muddy, undeveloped landscape where early residents like Venice Harris and Kay Saunders relied on rubber boots to navigate unpaved streets.
Neighborly efforts created makeshift walkways and community bonds grew as families faced daily challenges together.
David and Myrne Martin improvised deliveries, while Bob Blairβs Massey Harris tractor rescued stuck vehicles.
Access to Edmonton was treacherous, with gravel roads like 76th Avenue requiring careful travel, especially before the 1968 Sherwood Park Freeway and Highway 14 interchange improved safety.
Public transit evolved from private lines in the 1960s to todayβs Strathcona County Transit, serving nearly two million passengers annually.
Modern advances include the Sherwood Care Redevelopment Project and the new Edmonton-Strathcona County Footbridge, reflecting Sherwood Parkβs transformation from muddy beginnings to a connected, thriving community. Read More... |
Sherwood Park continues to build on its well-deserved reputation as one of Albertaβs happiest and most livable communities. Nestled just east of Edmonton, this thriving urban centre offers residents a rare balance of small-town friendliness and big-city convenience β a combination that keeps satisfaction levels high year after year.
Local families and newcomers alike point to several reasons why Sherwood Park stands out. The community is known for its strong schools, reliable healthcare, and exceptional public safety β factors that give residents peace of mind and a sense of stability. Add to that an abundance of parks, trails, and recreational spaces, and itβs easy to see why so many people are drawn to the areaβs active, outdoor lifestyle.
The communityβs infrastructure also plays a key role in its success. Well-planned neighbourhoods, modern amenities, and efficient connections to Edmonton make commuting simple while preserving Sherwood Parkβs calm and relaxed pace. Residents enjoy clean streets, well-maintained facilities, and easy access to everything from local boutiques and cafes to major shopping centres and entertainment options.
But what truly sets Sherwood Park apart is its strong sense of community spirit. Whether itβs the weekend farmersβ markets, youth sports programs, or volunteer-driven events, thereβs always something bringing people together. This shared pride and participation create more than just a place to live β they create a place to belong.
As Alberta continues to grow and change, Sherwood Park remains a shining example of what makes community life meaningful: safety, opportunity, and connection. Itβs no surprise that so many residents describe living here with one simple word β happy. Read More... |
Strathcona County RCMP are warning locals about a sharp rise in phone scams where fraudsters pose as banks or credit unions.
Scammers use technology to make their calls look like theyβre coming from real financial institutions, even matching the numbers on debit or credit cards.
They claim your account has been compromised, urging you to reveal banking or personal details β a tactic intended to steal your information.
Residents are urged to stay cautious and avoid sharing personal details or banking data over the phone.
Authorities emphasize not to trust caller ID alone and advise directly contacting your bank using official numbers if youβre ever in doubt.
Anyone suspecting they have been targeted or who has mistakenly shared information should reach out promptly to police and their financial institution.
Anonymous tips can also be shared with Crime Stoppers to help protect the community. Read More... |

The Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA) is set to resume formal bargaining with the Teachers' Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) and a mediator on October 14, marking a potential turning point in negotiations.
This follows key exploratory talks that leaders say have moved the process forward.
More than 51,000 teachers and school administrators have been on strike for four days, disrupting classes across Alberta.
ATA President Jason Schilling expressed hope, calling the renewed discussions a chance to reset after past mediation failed.
Meanwhile, TEBAβs recent lockout noticeβnow in effectβprevents rotating job action and temporarily ends the teachersβ strike mandate if a tentative deal is reached.
Finance Minister Nate Horner welcomed the progress, urging both sides to reach a fair, balanced agreement.
The strikeβs impact is being felt by families provincewide, as both sides work towards restoring normalcy in Albertaβs schools. Read More... |
